THE
SHADOW OF THINGS TO COME
In
1854, Kick-ee-som-lo, daughter of Chief Sealth (Seattle), born in the morning
shadow of Mt. Tohoma (Rainier),
was 30-something when the European immigrants began to invade her home in great
numbers. She saw
forests and thickets cut down and replaced by streets and buildings; she saw
destruction all around. Her
despair drove her to alcoholism; at times when she was drinking heavily she
would throw stones at the houses
of Seattle's sheriff and mayor. Even in
her old age she was known for her feisty wit and ways. She died
and alcoholic with the certain sad knowledge that her home would never again be
the land she had
learned to love; harboring a vision of The Shadow of Things to Come.
